PINEHURST, N.C. — A man who threatened first responders battling a fire was shot and killed by police Wednesday, according to Pinehurst officials.
The State Bureau of Investigation on Thursday identified the slain man as Sawyer Felton Frye, 37.
Officers about 8 a.m. Wednesday responded to a report of a suspicious person off Remington Lane, officials said. Once they arrived, they saw smoke coming from the home and called the fire department.
While crews were working on putting it out, a man came out of the home, charging at first responders with a weapon, according to village officials.
Frye was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The Pinehurst Fire Department later got the fire under control. The SBI is investigating, which is standard procedure.
