LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Rain may not be ideal for a day at the track for some, but it meant more exciting races for Danny Monaghan during Friday's Oaks Day.

What You Need To Know

  • The track at Churchill Downs was categorized as "sloppy" for Friday's Oaks Day

  • Some track-goers adjusted their bets based on the conditions

  • Better conditions are expected for Saturday's Kentucky Derby 150

“The favorites kind of come in expecting good track conditions, but once you get that wet track, all bets are kind of off,” Monaghan said.

Equibase, a company which provides racehorse statistics, reported the track as “sloppy conditions” just after noon Friday.

“We’ve been looking at the track conditions, especially since it’s so wet today, looking at how many races they’ve been in and what conditions," Monaghan said.

Russell Cunningham is visiting from Texas and said this was his first time betting on a race in wet conditions.

“I’m kind of playing around with my bets a little bit, looking at the stats," Cunningham said. "What I usually do is look at the overall records, especially for this year, to see what horse is doing well. But now, I’m having (to) factor in the water, and that’s making it a little more difficult to pick than the last years.”

Rain or shine, Monaghan said it’s hard to beat the feeling of picking a winner.

“It’s the best feeling in the world," he said. "You’ve spent the time looking at it, and that’s the best part, when the money starts rolling in.”

Better conditions are expected for the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby; however, Spectrum News 1 meteorologists say showers and/or thunderstorms remain possible.
