Clarification: While initial reports said there were 40 students on the bus when the crash happened, officials said Wednesday afternoon there were only 15 students on board at time of the wreck.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Seventeen people, including 15 children, were injured when a school bus collided with a dump truck in south Charlotte Wednesday morning, officials say.

The three-vehicle crash happened before 7 a.m. on Sharonbrook Drive at Sharon Road West and involved a school bus, a dump truck and another car.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools says the bus involved, number 222, was carrying 15 South Mecklenburg High School students when the crash happened. Fifteen students were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to Medic.

Mecklenburg EMS says two people were seriously hurt in the crash.

"Repeat: All children have non life threatening injuries," Mecklenburg EMS tweeted.

Fourteen of the kids were taken to the hospital just to be checked out as a precaution, South Mecklenburg High School Marc Angerer said.

"I want to assure you that we take the safety of your children very seriously," Angerer said by email.

The bus driver was pinned in the crash and freed a short time later. CMS says the driver was hurt, but the severity of their injuries was not released.
