NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. — It's that time of year, once again, when many people will make their New Year's resolution to exercise, get fit, and strive toward being healthier.

Kelly Jennings is a coach and owner of CrossFit 859 and says success comes from being realistic. Jennings said, "The key to keeping your New Year's fitness resolution is to do something that's manageable. If you're going from not doing anything at all to saying, I'm going to get up at 4:30 five days a week, I'm going to be at the gym by five. I'm going to do an hour worth of cardio and then an hour worth of strength training. You might do that for three or four days, and then you're immediately going to fall off the wagon."

Finding the right program and sticking with it is the to success for any New Year’s fitness resolution. For John West, who has been working here at CrossFit 859 in Nicholasville for than more three-years, his workout regime has not only changed his life, but improved his overall fitness.

West said he enjoys working out because, "It keeps me mobile, keeps me up, keeps me from being in the hospital or nursing home. Those are my goals. I want to be upright, most of my life."

Starting a new exercise routine isn't about jumping in with both feet right away. It's about working your way in, getting used to it, and letting your body get accustomed to the change in your routine.

Jennings said "Start small. Do something that's actually attainable, that you'll be able to stick with for the remainder of the year, rather than this audacious goal that you're going to hit for maybe three or four days, and then fall off. Do something manageable."

West added you need to just make a commitment. He said, "The main thing is to get started. Then commit to it and be consistent with it. Start with little baby steps, you don’t have to come in and be an Olympic athlete."

With COVID on the minds of many, it’s important to find a gym that takes precautions not only for your safety with proper fitness training, but for your health and well-being.

Jennings said health and wellness is important. "During these times, it's actually more important now to stay healthy. It's more important now to get in and build that immune system up by exercising and by staying active during these times."

Times that can only get better with a commitment to a 2022 New Year’s resolution to stay healthy and fit.
