BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — After a year off due to COVID-19, the Down Syndrome of South Central Kentucky (DSSKY) group held its inaugural Golf Scramble event at the Bowling Green Country Club.
What You Need To Know
- The golf scramble was to raise money and awareness for Down syndrome
- 100% of the proceeds went to the organization
- The cost was $400 per team
Twenty teams competed in a Best Ball competition, and Vice President of DSSKY Jaime Dobbs said this is something that has been in the works for a while.
“COVID[-19] has been really hard on people with Down syndrome. They rely a lot on social interactions," said Dobbs. "They are some of the most loving people that you will ever come in contact with, so it’s great to be out and raising money for these people."
Scott Essler, whose son has Down syndrome, was one of the participants, and for him, the day was more than just a good time.
“My heart and passion is for individuals with Down syndrome," said Essler. "This is a great opportunity to support the DSSKY, and I was definitely all in when I heard we were planning it.”
Essler said his son, who is heavily involved with the DSSKY, was elated to hear about the scramble.
"He was so excited," said Essler. "He participates in everything he can, so this really made him happy."
The tournament raised over $1,000, and Dobbs said she hopes this can become an annual event.
"We worked very hard and have great sponsors so we're going to see how it goes today", said Dobbs. "I am definitely looking forward to this being a yearly event."
