LEXINGTON, Ky. — As Election Day nears, state officials are asking Kentuckians to use these last few days to get their early votes in so lines at the polls are kept to a minimum Nov. 3.

Kentucky law professor Josh Douglas says it's important for Kentuckians to go out and vote on Monday, as polls are closed Sunday for early in-person voting. Douglas says state officials were expecting one-third of Kentuckians to use absentee ballots, one-third to use the early voting polling centers, and one-third to vote in-person on Election Day. However, as votes are coming in, Douglas says the numbers are not where they expected.

"I'm a little bit concerned that we'll have lines that are particularly long on Tuesday, so anything we can do especially if you haven't voted yet and you plan to and you can go to vote on Monday, that's really going to be crucial to help reduce those lines," Douglas said.

Kentucky is one state that is able to start the process early by verifying signatures beforehand. The Secretary of State Michael Adams said that by Tuesday night, the state should have most of its election results counted and reported.

“Unlike in some other states, I think we may have a decent sense of the winners in Kentucky because we'll be able to count all the absentee ballots that have already arrived and all of the early vote and the in person Tuesday vote,” Douglas said.

Early voting ends on Monday, Nov. 2, and polling locations will be open from 8:30 a.m to 4 p.m. For more information on voting in Kentucky, you can go to our Decision 2020 page.
