LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky’s 4th District Congressman was highlighted in the HBO documentary “The Swamp”. 

The almost two-hour-long documentary follows U.S. Reps. Thomas Massie (R), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), and Ken Buck (R-CO), the film looks at how special interests and money rule Washington D.C. making a case that prestigious committee assignments are given to members who can fundraise the most money for the party. 

After the premiere of the film Massie, Gaetz, and Buck held a Facebook Live to discuss the final product, overall Massie said he approved of the film. 

“It wasn’t the movie I would have produced but they were fair in that they didn’t cut up what we said,” he said. "I think they left out a lot of good material but the words that we said were our words they weren’t deep fakes. They gave us a chance to say our piece, I think they gave us a fair shot at getting our point across.”

Massie’s Democratic opponent Dr. Alexandra Owensby said the film highlighted how the four-term congressman is not in Washington to serve his constituents. 

“You should be going to Congress to work for your district, certainly also exposing the underhanded things that are going on as part of that but you also need to be there to be a voice for your people and to help them out and that to me was concerning that that never came up that he works for the people of his district,” she said. 

The film also touched on the “Mr. No” title Massie has gained during his time in D. C., during the film he notes he votes 25 percent of the time against his party. The nickname was first given to him during his first term in Congress but came back into circulation after he tried to force a vote on the massive coronavirus relief bill, the CARES Act, ultimately he was one of only a few representatives to vote against the measure. Owensby says he has a record of opposing measures that will help residents in the 4th district and voting for measures that will benefit him. 

“He consistently votes against anything that really helps the people of the district out,” she said. “The only thing that he really does vote for are things that will help himself out like the PRIME Act because he’s a cattle farmer so he’s all about that and getting that passed.” 

During the film, Massie denounces the idea that carbon dioxide is linked to climate change. The movie insinuates he holds that stance because he does not want to close fundraising opportunities from the uber-wealthy Koch brothers. 

During the Facebook Live after the premiere, Massie denied that assertion. 

“The implication that they made in the movie is because I’m under the finger of the Koch brothers or something that the Koch’s would cut off my financing if I ever said that CO2 was a problem,” he said. “Well I told you right in the film the reason I like CO2, I have a farm, I grow food and it’s plant food.” 

Owensby says this another case of Massie protecting his interests, 

“It benefits him to not acknowledge the problem,” she said. 

Spectrum News 1 reached out to Thomas Massie’s campaign for a response on Owensby’s comments but have not heard back.
