LEXINGTON, Ky. — Due to coronavirus-related concerns, public pools in Lexington will not open this summer, the city announced. Summer camps, however, will operate with limited registration.
“We have spent considerable time studying how we could open our pools safely,” said Monica Conrad, director of Parks and Recreation. “We don’t think there is a truly safe approach. We would have to limit pools to very few swimmers to maintain social distancing, and we would only be able to open for a few weeks. Governor Beshear has said public pools cannot open until June 29."
The summer camps will be available for children ages six through 13, and participants will be selected through a lottery. Registration for the camps begins Friday, June 12 at 10 a.m., but parents must set up an account by June 11.
“We know parents want their children to have some fun summer activities,” Conrad said. “These camps may provide some answers.”
Another activity available for children is Raven Run Nature Academy which is starting a do-it-yourself Nature Academy. Families can visit Raven Run on their own time and complete assignments by using a kit they can receive by signing up online.
Conrad said the city hopes that when Gov. Andy Beshear (D) allows playgrounds to open it will also be able to open spraygrounds, giving children a place to cool off.
