NORTH CAROLINA -- Virtual graduation celebrations are taking the place of the traditional ceremonies this year, and this may be one of the biggest.
This weekend, former President Barack Obama hosted a virtual commencement presented by JPMorgan Chase called “#Show Me Your Walk HBCU Edition." The event highlights the achievements of HBCU graduates across the country and raises funds for students.
N.C. A&T State University graduate Tiara Cottman said it’s a silver lining during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I know the Class of 2020 will overcome this," Cottman said. "I know that we will be better than ever, and we will look back on this and say ‘okay, we didn’t have our ceremony but we had all these other things'."
According to the United Negro College Fund, HBCU's produce 70 percent of African American doctors and dentists, 50 percent of black lawyers, and 80 percent of black judges.
