WASHINGTON, DC — Good news for those who are on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue approved the state's request to allow online grocery shopping for SNAP recipients.
Kentucky, Missouri, and Texas all submitted requests. The approval will allow the three states to speed up the implementation process of online purchasing with authorized SNAP retailers.
There are more than 500,000 people in Kentucky participating in SNAP — 225,000 households. That is almost $750 million a year in federal funding.
The three states will join the SNAP online pilot which is currently operating in 16 other states. The authorized retailers working with all of the pilot states are Amazon and Walmart. With these states, more than half of all households receiving SNAP will have access to online shopping.
