BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The Housing Authority of Bowling Green is making grocery shopping more accessible with its nonprofit Mobile Grocery Store. The shop on wheels provides affordable groceries to those who lack transportation and or live in a neighborhood that lacks access to fresh and affordable food. The nonprofit program launched last year and has served over four thousand people.

One of the stops for the Mobile Grocery Store is Ms. Hilda’s Hospitality House. The store allows community members to grab things like household items, fruits, vegetables, and snacks, for low prices compared to the grocery store. The truck makes stops five days a week, and for Carolyn Bates, it has become a positive addition to her weekly routine. “Monday through Wednesday I might go up there and get me something off the truck.” Says Bates.

The bus was donated by the Warren County Public School system and was refurbished to add coolers, freezers, shelves, and air conditioning. The bus has made an impact not only on the customers but for the Mobile Grocery Store operator, Danny Carothers.

He says it's a great way to give back and feel good.

“It’s awesome I love my community. It's been a blessing you meet a lot of good people, just don’t have no way to get to the grocery store. We’re living in a food desert so this helps them a lot, so it works out just right.”

The Mobile grocery store runs five days a week, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and services 25 different neighborhoods. To see the closest stop near you, click here
