LEXINGTON, Ky. — Sixteen years ago today, firefighter Brenda Cowan was killed in the line of duty.
She was the city of Lexington’s first black female firefighter.
Today - Kentucky’s second city celebrated Cowan's trailblazing legacy.
Community leaders unveiled a new banner that now hangs in the lobby of Lexington’s newest elementary school, which is named in honor of Cowan.
Cowan was fatally shot while responding to a domestic violence call in 2004.
Lexington firefighters participated in a dedication ceremony and reading activities with students at the school to celebrate the legacy of Lieutenant Cowan.
“You know they obviously weren't around, but you know they know the stories and know they're taught a little bit about the background of Brenda and who she was, both as a firefighter and as a person and I think that this is a good place for them to learn about her and start. It's a great impact on the community as well," adds Lt. McMenama.
Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton also announced through a proclamation that the city would be observing February 13, as ‘Brenda Cowan Legacy Day.'
