NATIONWIDE - Ford is recalling thousands of its 2012-2014 and 2017 Focus cars because of a software update.

THE DETAILS:

  • 2012 AND 2017 Focus with 2.0-liter GID engines built from October 7, 201 through July 23, 2012 and from August 24 through April 13, 2017.
  • 2013-14 Focus ST vehicles with 2.0-liter GTDI engines built from May 3, 2012 through December 11, 2014.

58 thousand cars are being recalled in North America because a software update that was part of a previous recall was incomplete.  That recall from last Octobor was supposed to fix a gas tank problem that could cause stalling and other issues.  Since the update wasn't complete, bad software may not respond when needed. If a valve malfunctions and sticks open, Ford says it could deform the fuel tank.  If that happens, owners could see a warning lights and an inaccurate gas gauge.

If your car is part of the recall, you should contact your local dealer. You can also contact Ford at 866-436-7332. Dealers will reprogram your car's software to prevent the emissions system from malfunctioning.  You will not be charged for any of these repairs.

The automaker said it was not aware of any injuries or crashes associated with the defect. The Focus is not built at any of the Kentucky Ford plants.
