NEWPORT, Ky. — Erin Snow is one of many in Newport on Sunday loading up the car with bought groceries. She said inside the store was busy, as was the parking lot. “The cashier was actually mentioning this is the busiest time of year for them," she said.
Snow said she's not the head chef of this Thanksgiving's feast, but is noticing how expensive it is to shop now and offered to chip in to help with rising costs. “It never feels like the amount of bags adds up to what I just spent," she said.
A 2022 survey done by Farm Bureau reports costs on this year's Thanksgiving meal is up from last year. A classic meal to feed about a family of 10 is up 20% in price. That's something Iona Muir said she has a trick to help manage. “You know slowly but surely is the best way to do it because everything is so expensive like just the basics and do it bit by bit and it’s not so much sticker shock by the end of the day," Muir said.
Both she and Snow said they have favorite sides to eat during the big meal, and Muir feels for those who are on more of a low-income basis trying to navigate grocery shopping right now, especially during the holidays.
“The holidays are when you want all those extra things. You want the things that are a story from your childhood that you want your own family to experience and enjoy and there’s all the little treats you want to have in the house and I think that’s one of the things that gives people pauses on whether or not they can do all the things they did in the past this year," she said.
