LOUISVILLE, Ky. — There may only be 11 pipers piping this holiday season, but there will be many more runners running and walkers walking thanks to the Kentucky Derby Festival (KDF)'s holiday-themed virtual 5K, "Tinsel Trot."

What You Need To Know

  • KDF hosting 5K in partnership with Oxmoor Center

  • Registration is $45, open through Dec. 7

  • Registrants receive choice of Tinsel Trot merch or KDF ornament

  • Participants can finish at their own pace

KDF's inaugural Tinsel Trot, hosted in partnership with Oxmoor Center, allows each participant to track their miles over multiple days at their own pace. All participants will have until Dec. 15 to complete the 5K.

"The Tinsel Trot is an easy way to stay active this holiday season and it’s something you can do with your whole family,” said Matt Gibson, Kentucky Derby Festival president and CEO. “We hope our first-ever virtual 5k shares some of the Derby Festival spirit we've been missing all year."

Registration for the virtual event is $45 per person. Participants can receive either a Tinsel Trot hoodie and facemask or a Kentucky Derby Festival-themed Christopher Radko ornament.

Since the 5K is virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic, participants can complete their race anywhere — from home, at a park, or even during a trip to the grocery.

Have any holiday shopping to finish? The Oxmoor Center invites all participants to multi-task and get their steps in while shopping. Five and a half laps adds up to a 5K, so racers can finish all 3.1 miles while finding those last-minute gifts.

Oxmoor also plans to set up a photo-finish line in the mall, giving participants the perfect selfie opportunity. Tinsel Trotters who do participate inside the Oxmoor Mall will be required to follow its safety guidelines.

Registration is open now through Dec. 7 and participants have until Dec. 15 to complete their 5K.
