EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, along with her former rival Rick Caruso and Lakers coach JJ Redick announced a public-private partnership Thursday to rebuild the Palisades Recreation Center.
The partnership includes the groups LA Strong Sports, Steadfast LA and the city.
The recreation center was damaged in the Palisades Fire back in January.
“We will reimagine and rebuild the Palisades Rec Center,” Redick said. “We will make it the cornerstone of this community.”
Redick, who had moved back to the neighborhood with his wife Chelsea before losing his home, said he was excited and grateful to announce the partnership.
“I’m so grateful for her support,” Redick said while introducing Bass. “I’m grateful for her to prioritize this project.”
Bass said that she was committed to cutting red tape and clearing debris as quickly as possible to make the rebuilding possible.
The process to rebuild Pacific Palisades began just 35 days after the fires ignited — roughly half the time it took after the 2018 Woolsey Fire, Bass has noted.
“My top priority is to get people home,” Bass said Thursday, adding that she knew the center played an important role in healing the community.
Caruso called the center “the heartbeat of the Palisades,” saying that it added to the “sadness and loss of lifestyle.”
A few more individuals were credited with making the partnership a possibility, including Councilmembers Traci Park and Janet Jackson. Jackson grew up in the area, Redick noted. Park was said to be in Hawaii, learning about the area’s rebuilding process.
