LOS ANGELES — Ontario International Airport, a popular alternative for Southland travelers, unveiled a Global Entry Enrollment Center Thursday in conjunction with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The center, the sixth in the state, provides another location for people to enroll in the program that offers expedited security clearance for "pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States." The closest such center to Ontario was previously at Los Angeles International Airport.

"We are thrilled that U.S. Customs and Border Protection has selected ONT to serve as the site of its newest Global Entry Enrollment Center and look forward to helping residents across Southern California access this time- saving international travel amenity," Alan D. Wapner, president of the Ontario International Airport Authority Board of Commissioners, said in a statement.

Ontario Airport officials noted that the facility has seen a doubling in international travel volumes over the past year. In October, the airport and CBP introduced the Simplified Arrivals system at the airport, employing "facial biometrics" to replace manual document checks required for admission into the country.

The Global Entry system provides dedicated lanes to expedite clearance for arriving international travelers enrolled in the program. Enrollment includes a background check and an in-person interview.

"The new center reflects CBP's commitment to improving the customer experience as Global Entry continues to attract thousands of new applicants in the Greater Los Angeles area and neighboring communities," Cheryl M. Davies, CBP Director of Field Operations in Los Angeles, said. "We are very pleased with this expansion which brings visitors to the area and helps boost the local economy."
