The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner has temporarily canceled service between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo because of severe weather conditions, the agency tweeted late Monday night. A spokesperson for Pacific Surfliner told Spectrum News 1 that Union Pacific, which owns the track and right of way in the Santa Barbara area, recommended a temporary service suspension because several large trees had fallen on the track. The railway also had concerns about potential landslides from adjacent slopes.
Regular service is expected to resume Wednesday, though Pacific Surfliner "will be prioritizing passenger safety as we consider future service suspensions," the spokesperson said, based on track conditions. Three additional storms are expected in Southern California over the next nine days.
Tuesday’s cancellations are as follows:
- 761 canceled in its entirety between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo
- 765 canceled between Los Angeles and Goleta
- 770 canceled between Goleta and Los Angeles
- 774 canceled between San Luis Obispo and Los Angeles
- 777 canceled between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo
- 784 canceled between Goleta and Los Angeles
- 785 canceled between Los Angeles and Goleta
- 794 canceled in its entirety between San Luis Obispo and Los Angeles
- Thruway bus service is also canceled north of Los Angeles because of flooding on Highway 101
While Pacific Surfliner tickets will be accepted on Metrolink trains traveling between LA and Oxnard, no other alternate transportation is available, the agency said.
