CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook kicked off the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference Monday, speaking to an enthusiastic crowd of computer-generated memoji — and thousands of fans worldwide who had tuned in online.

During the keynote session for the legendary information technology conference, one the world's most valuable companies previewed iOS 15 and the new features it will enable in some of Apple's most popular products and apps. We walk you through the highlights:

FaceTime

The latest version of the iPhone operating system will include multiple upgrades to its video phone call feature. Spatial Audio helps call participants feel as if they’re sitting in the same room. A new grid view allows multiple people on the call. Similar to Zoom, users can now send links to schedule FaceTime calls, which can also be done with Android and Windows using a web browser.

SharePlay

There are several new features that allow for shared experiences, like listening to music and watching a movie with people who are not in the same space but are experiencing it at the exact same time in sync. Those participating in the SharePlay experience can show themselves on the screen while it’s happening and also share their own apps, such as Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, NBA, Twitch, TikTok, ESPN+, Paramount+ and MasterClass.

Wallet

Keys for people’s cars, work and hotels can be digitized and accessed through an iPhone’s Wallet. The Hyatt hotel chain will make virtual room keys available through Wallet at more than 1,000 of its properties this fall. Some states will also allow people to scan their driver’s licenses and other IDs and store them in the Wallet in a way that is secure and encrypted. Apple is working with the federal Transportation Security Administration to make Wallet IDs usable to board flights.

Maps

Available in select cities later this year, Maps will include a new 3D view that shows elevation. Turn-by-turn directions will now include crosswalks and lights and live renderings of complex intersections and ramps. For public transit users, Maps will follow their route and let them know when they’re approaching their destination. It will also scan the buildings as they exit a transit station to provide more accurate location information.

AirPods

A new feature called Conversation Boost will help people with hearing challenges focus on the person talking directly to them. The Find My feature helps to find AirPods Pro and Max more easily with a proximity view of where they’ve been left and a beeping sound.

Privacy

Apple unveiled a variety of new privacy features Monday, including Mail Privacy Protection that allows email senders to hide their IP address and locations to prevent senders from seeing whether they've opened an email. A new Hide My Email feature is built into Mail and Safari and generates randomized, unique email addresses that can be forwarded to a user’s main account so they do not need to give out their actual email address.

iCloud

A new Account Recovery feature allows people who’ve forgotten their password to add a trusted family member or friend to get a code that will allow them back into their account without allowing that friend or family member to access it themselves. It also enables a so-called legacy contact so users can designate someone to access their account when they die.

Health

The Health app will have three new features to help identify, measure and understand the user’s health changes. A new Walking Steadiness metric can assess the risk of falling by measuring the speed and evenness of a person’s gait and alerting them if it senses any changes over time.

The app also will allow users to better understand things like lab results and to forward select (and encrypted) health data to their doctors. A new Health Sharing feature will allow people to track the health of their family and loved ones once given permission and to receive notifications if a health trend is detected that may need medical attention.

Beta versions of iOS 15 will be in developers' hands Monday, and the public will be able to test the software in July. The final versions will be released publicly this fall.
