CYPRESS — An 8-year-old gelding with 40 career races has died after suffering a racing injury at Los Alamitos, state horse racing officials reported Sunday.
"The 8-year-old gelding Give Me the Lute was injured while competing in the third race Saturday at Los Alamitos, requiring euthanasia," California Horse Racing Board spokesman Mike Marten told City News Service on Sunday.
The official race chart says he "tracked from inside, went wrong past the nine-sixteenths pole, pulled up and came to a stop near the seven- sixteenths pole and was transported off the track via equine ambulance."
Give Me the Lute had 11 victories in his 40 career races. His most recent first-place finish was June 13 at Santa Anita.
He is the 17th horse to die from a racing or training injury at the Cypress track this year.
Los Alamitos had 13 horses die from racing or training injuries in 2023.
