EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Bronny James scored four points in 25 minutes, 41 seconds of play Sunday evening in the South Bay Lakers' 127-122 loss to the Stockton Kings in his second game in the NBA G League.
The oldest son of NBA career scoring leader LeBron James made 2 of 10 shots, including missing both his 3-point shots, had two rebounds and two assists. The Lakers were outscored by seven when he was on the court.
Forward Armel Taouré led six players in double figures for the Lakers (1-2) with a game-high equaling 25, while guard Quincy Olivari added 24 and forward Maxwell Lewis 22, before a sellout crowd of 676 at UCLA Health Training Center in El Segundo.
Colby Jones led seven players in double figures for the Kings (3-1) with 25 while fellow forward Isaac Jones added and guard Mason Jones added 22 each. The Joneses are not related.
Former USC standout Boogie Ellis added 12 in 22:24 off the bench. Drew Timme, an Associated Press second-team All-America forward with Gonzaga in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, had seven in 22:42 off the bench for Stockton, the Sacramento Kings' NBA G League affiliate.
"I thought Bronny played within the flow of the game, defended well but I think for him and for those other guys, it's about bringing a higher intensity level and a higher off ball compete and awareness," South Bay coach Zack Guthrie said, referring to Taouré, who played 4:28 for the Los Angeles Lakers Saturday in New Orleans, and Maxwell Lewis, who, like James and Taouré, were also with the Lakers Friday in San Antonio Friday and New Orleans Saturday, but did not play.
Guthrie also praised the 20-year-old James for making "a great suggestion before the game."
"We were talking about how we were guarding certain actions," said Guthrie, who is in his first season as South Bay's coach after being an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards the past three seasons. "He made a suggestion. I thought about it and said, `That's good. That's the better way to handle it' and so we adjusted to that."
Guthrie later explained "it wasn't a change of how we're guarding it, it was a better system of communication."
In his other game with South Bay, James scored six points, making 2 of 9 shots, including missing all four of his 3-point shots, made his only free throw, which was worth 2 points under an experimental G League rule, and had four assists in 31:21 in a 110-96 victory over the Salt Lake City Stars on Nov. 9 at the UCLA Health Training Center.
Under the NBA G League's experimental one free throw rule, one made free throw is awarded one, two or three points in the event of any foul that would typically result in one, two or three free throws being shot under standard NBA rules.
The rule does not apply during the last two minutes of the fourth quarter or all of any overtime period.
The 6-foot-2-inch, 210-pound guard was again assigned to South Bay earlier Sunday by the Lakers after not playing in any of their last three games. He has scored four points in 15:50 of play in six games, making 1 of 6 shots, missing all four of his 3-point attempts, and making both his free throws.
James was not made available to reporters after Sunday's game.
The Los Angeles Lakers initially assigned the younger James to their NBA G League affiliate Nov. 7 to give him more playing time to develop his game.
"Anytime you can register a minute of professional basketball, it's a learning experience," Guthrie said. "So (with) his 26 minutes tonight, he'll learn and grow. He's been a phenomenal kid."
