IRVINE, Calif. — The Irvine City Council will hear an agenda item Tuesday that could oust Orange County Soccer Club from its local stadium and replace it with a Los Angeles Galaxy minor league squad.

Orange County Soccer Club has been setting down roots at the Great Park facility since it arrived five years ago, adding community events and building inroads to local youth teams. The club has designs on developing talent through youth clubs in the interest of growing the sport in the U.S. and eventually finding professional talent.

The team has been signing short-term deals but could be out by next year if it doesn’t renegotiate.

Interim Club President of Business Operations Dan Rutstein said the club has been trying to open negotiations with the city for months. But last Thursday, Rutstein became aware of the upcoming agenda item that includes a discussion about what he called an “exclusive” deal with the LA Galaxy.

“We’ve spent our time since last Thursday mobilizing our fan base to show them it’s absolutely unacceptable that a team from LA evict the local club,” he said.

Rutstein said fans have rallied, calling the response an affirmation of the club’s value to the community.

Orange County Soccer Club has been interested in expanding its use of the stadium, spreading more of its branding throughout the stadium and has put in a bid to run events like graduations and business conferences.

Rutstein said if the club doesn’t find a middle ground, they’ll be without a venue next year. Plus, he said, there are smaller pro clubs that use the stadium that would also be displaced.

“We love that stadium. It’s our home stadium, and we want to see as much soccer played there as possible,” he said. “Soccer teams are a lot more than the product on the field. It’s about being a part of the community.”

The current leasing model allows 40 days of access for professional teams and 80 days for community use. If the city were to switch to a partnership with LA Galaxy, there would be 18 days for professional soccer and 118 for the community, according to the city.
