LOS ANGELES — Assemblyman Mark González of Los Angeles has been appointed Democratic majority whip for the 2025-26 legislative session by Speaker Robert Rivas, González's office announced Saturday.
"I am deeply honored by Speaker Rivas' trust in appointing me to serve as majority whip," González said in a statement. "I share the speaker's commitment to delivering practical solutions that make a real difference for all Californians. In this leadership role, I will work tirelessly to ensure critical legislation garners the support needed to move our state forward.
"I am eager to collaborate with Speaker Rivas, Assistant Majority Whips Assemblymembers Michelle Rodriguez (D-Ontario) and Jessica Caloza (D-East Los Angeles), and our Assembly colleagues to address key challenges like housing affordability, public safety, and the rising cost of living."
González, 40, is a former chair of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party. He won election in November to represent the 54th Assembly District, which includes parts of downtown Los Angeles and the Commerce and Montebello areas.
"Our Assembly is focused on improving everyday life for all Californians, and I'm confident Assemblymember González will be a strong member of our leadership team," said Rivas, D-Hollister. "I look forward to working with Mark as we chart a path forward that renews opportunity and innovation in our state."
Whips generally serve as assistant leaders and enforcers in a legislative body, counting heads and rounding up members of their political party for votes and quorum calls.
