ORANGE, Calif. — Mark Murphy, who served as a mayor and city councilman in Orange, died at his home after suffering an unspecified medical emergency at the age of 67, city officials said.
Murphy died on Friday.
“Mark, an Orange native and lifelong resident, was a dedicated public servant who served on the city council as mayor and a councilmember for more than two decades,” city officials said in a statement Saturday. “Mark is survived by his wife Vikki and mother Lois.
“The City of Orange will be forever grateful for Mark’s devotion and service.”
Murphy began serving on the Orange City Council in 1993, becoming mayor in 2000. He served on the Orange County Transportation Authority board beginning in 2017 and was selected chairman in 2022.
He also worked full-time for Hewlett-Packard for 33 years before retiring in 2020, according to the OC Register.
The newspaper reported that Murphy was a lifelong resident of the OC city, graduating from Orange High School and attending Santa Ana College before completing his bachelor’s degree and a master’s of Business Administration at USC.
`He was active in the community, whether he was in office or not," Murphy’s friend Jimmy Camp told the Register. “He was always at everything, down at the Orange circle for any of the celebrations or car shows — he was just the kind of guy that was always everywhere.”
