LOS ANGELES — In a bid to reduce crime and accidental shootings, the Los Angeles City Council Tuesday called for a report on resources needed to host more gun buyback events at all police department bureaus.
In a 12-0 vote, council members instructed the Los Angeles Police Department in partnership with the Mayor's Office of Gang Reduction and Youth Development to report on the personnel needed for the events, potential locations, as well as financial resources for them.
Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez introduced the motion asking for the report on Aug. 30, which Councilman John Lee seconded.
Council members Traci Park, Katy Yaroslavsky and Rodriguez were absent during Tuesday's vote.
Gun buyback programs are organized to "reduce the number of firearms in the community by offering individuals the chance to anonymously surrender guns in exchange for an incentive," the motion reads.
Beginning in 2009, the Mayor's Office of Gang Reduction and Youth Development and the LAPD hosted annual gun buyback events at certain locations where residents could surrender their weapons to law enforcement in exchange for gift cards.
In December 2022, the LAPD hosted its 13th annual gun buyback, which resulted in a 69% increase compared to an event hosted in March of that same year, officials said. Participation in the program had steadily increased since 2018, according to the LAPD. The department said it recovered 459 weapons from residents, including rifles, shotguns, pistols, "ghost guns," assault weapons and machine guns.
