LOS ANGELES — Every year, the Program For Torture Victims organization helps about 500 asylum seekers resettle in California as they flee from gender violence, political persecution and more.
Once a person is able to start their asylum case, it can take about six months before an individual can start working with a work permit, according to the organization.
