MONROVIA, Calif. – Baking sweet treats is a passion for Janette Laguna. She is a foodie, but also has a passion for natural health.
Laguna graduated from the Holistic Life Institute as a certified Holistic Health Practitioner and a certified Holistic Health Science Educator.
“I learned how food and impact the bodies, positively or negatively,” says Laguna.
Laguna implemented her studies into her home life, until the unthinkable happened. She was diagnosed as insolent resistant and pre-diabetic.
“I was devastated because for many years I had implemented a whole food diet at home and with my family, so I couldn’t understand if I cut out the processed foods how could this have happened,” says Laguna.
Her body wasn’t breaking down glucose properly and she needed to change her diet yet again for her new needs. This is when she fully realized that every body is different and needs different food, so she had to cut out sugar.
“I love to eat desserts, so I started playing around with sugar free sugar substitutes.” says Laguna.
This is how her baking business was born. She became licensed by the Health Department and is insured to cook and sell items from her home. She now makes cakes, cookies, and cupcakes that are nutritious.
“Gluten free, grain free, sugar free, and all natural. All of my desserts are that profile,” says Laguna.
Laguna says in her studies, sugar kept popping up as something that leads to many health conditions. These desserts are for everyone who wants to eat clean.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, Americans are eating and drinking too much added sugars, which can lead to a plethora of health problems. They also say the leading sources of added sugars from grain-based cakes and cookies along with dairy desserts.
“Cupcakes and cakes are dairy free also,” says Laguna.
The healthier treats offer dessert to anyone suffering from diabetes, inflammatory conditions, and others that prevent them from eating surgar.
“It’s not fair, so I get a lot of joy out of being able to provide them something that won’t compromise their health,” says Laguna.
The most important piece of advice she can give is to listen to your body and follow what it is telling you.
“The one-size-fits-all motto of nutrition or health care doesn’t always work for each person,” says Laguna.
