1. Cal Fire releases revised fire hazard zones for LA County

Cal Fire released updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps for Los Angeles County, using various criteria to identify wildfire hazard areas and ranking them on a three-tiered scale.

The maps, generally updated every decade, can impact building and clearance requirements in areas deemed to be in particular hazard areas.

According to Cal Fire, the determination of "hazard" is based "on the physical conditions that create a likelihood and expected fire behavior over a 30- to 50-year period, without considering mitigation measures such as home hardening, recent wildfire or fuel reduction efforts."

Identified hazard zones are divided into three levels — moderate, high and very high.

The maps and more information about them are available online.

2. USC star JuJu Watkins suffers season-ending knee injury in March Madness win over Mississippi State

JuJu Watkins was carried off the floor with a season-ending knee injury in the first quarter of top-seeded Southern California's game against Mississippi State in the NCAA Tournament on Monday night.

The crowd in Galen Center went silent as Gottlieb and two other USC staffers attended to the 19-year-old Watkins, a 6-foot-2 sophomore who averages 24.6 points. She was carried off by multiple people with the Trojans leading 13-2.

The Trojans won 96-59 to reach the Sweet 16.

Watkins has enjoyed good health in her brief college career. She started all 34 of USC's games as a freshman, when she was second in scoring nationally with 27.1 points a game. Her 920 points set a national record for freshman scoring.

4. Dozens of bird eggs and chicks rescued from wind-damaged eucalyptus tree in Marina del Rey

Dozens of bird eggs and chicks were rescued from nests in a single wind-damaged eucalyptus tree that was dangerously close to collapsing in a California park.

Now staff at the International Bird Rescue’s Los Angeles Wildlife Center have been working around the clock to care for the 47 eggs and 12 chicks, all double-crested Cormorants, in hopes that they will be able to be released back into the wild in a few months.

The tree at a park in Marina del Rey was flagged earlier this month after one of its trunks fell and crushed a trash bin enclosure, explained Nicole Mooradian, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches & Harbors. Its other trunk was showing signs of collapsing as well.

For at least five hours on March 10, tree contractors meticulously removed each of the 20 nests and chopped off branches one at a time. Biologists on the ground put the eggs and hatchlings in egg cartons and boxes with heated blankets acting as temporary incubators.

In Focus SoCal: How LA is responding to immigration crackdown

The Trump administration has ramped up its mass deportations efforts since January and is now facing a growing legal battle as a federal judge is questioning whether the administration ignored his orders to turn around planes carrying deportees to El Salvador.

Earlier this month, three organizations sued the administration for efforts to put an early end to temporary protected status for people from Haiti and Venezuela living in the United States. Last month, the White House rescinded the February 2026 extension that was granted under the Biden administration.

On this week’s “In Focus SoCal,” host Tanya McRae sits down with Los Angeles City Councilwoman Eunisses Hernandez, who is calling on the city to have clearer protocols for its immigrant sanctuary laws.
