1. Police search for gunman who shot 5 women, 1 man in South Los Angeles

Police Thursday are searching for the gunman who shot and wounded five women and one man who might not have been the intended targets in South Los Angeles.

The shooting was reported shortly after 3:12 p.m. Wednesday when officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street Community Police Station responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call at the intersection of 74th and Figueroa streets, police said.

When the officers arrived, they found the victims suffering from gunshot wounds, primarily in the lower extremities, police said. Police said the victims were walking along the street when three suspects drove up to them and opened fire, and then drove away from the scene.

Anyone with information regarding this shooting was asked to call the detectives at the 77th Street Community Police Station at 323-786-5420. During non-business hours or on weekends, calls should be made to 1-877-527-3247. Callers who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 800-222- 8477 or send tips to lacrimestoppers.org.

2. Judge weighs whether to dismiss movie armorer's conviction in fatal set shooting by Alec Baldwin

A judge is planning to hear arguments in court Thursday over whether to dismiss a criminal conviction against a movie armorer in the shooting death of a cinematographer by actor Alec Baldwin.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has requested a retrial or dismissal of her March conviction for involuntary manslaughter in response to allegations that prosecutors failed to share evidence including ammunition that might have been exculpatory in the shooting death that occurred on the set of the Western movie “Rust” in 2021.

Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer is reconsidering the armorer’s conviction after throwing out an involuntary manslaughter case against Baldwin midtrial on similar grounds.

Gutierrez-Reed started serving an 18-month sentence in March and has appealed the jury’s guilty verdict to a state appeals court. Prosecutors blamed Gutierrez-Reed for unwittingly bringing live ammunition onto the set and for failing to follow basic gun safety protocols.

3. Dodgers edge 2nd-place Padres 4-3, can clinch NL West with win in series finale

Shohei Ohtani singled in the go-ahead run before stealing his 56th base of the season in the sixth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres 4-3 on Wednesday night to move within a victory of clinching the NL West.

The Dodgers increased their lead over the second-place Padres to three games with four to play and reduced their magic number to two. Los Angeles needs a win in Thursday’s series finale to earn its 11th division title 12 years.

The Padres’ five-game winning streak ended a night after they celebrated making the postseason with a game-ending triple play on their biggest rival’s field. They remain 3 1/2 games ahead of Arizona and the New York Mets for the NL’s top wild-card spot.

Ohtani leads the major leagues with 130 runs scored, leaving him one shy of the Los Angeles Dodgers record set by Freddie Freeman last season.

4. Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoes bill to help Black families reclaim taken land

California Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill Wednesday that would have helped Black families reclaim or be compensated for property that was unjustly taken by the government.

The bill would have created a process for families to file a claim with the state if they believe the government seized their property through eminent domain due to discriminatory motives and without providing fair compensation.

The proposal by itself would not have been able to take full effect because lawmakers blocked another bill to create a reparations agency that would have reviewed claims.

"I thank the author for his commitment to redressing past racial injustices,” Newsom said in a statement. “However, this bill tasks a nonexistent state agency to carry out its various provisions and requirements, making it impossible to implement.”

The veto dealt a blow to a key part of a package of reparations bills the California Legislative Black Caucus backed this year in an effort to help the state atone for decades of policies that drove racial disparities for Black Americans.

Francis Ford Coppola makes his biggest film gamble yet in 'Megalopolis'

Francis Ford Coppola has given Hollywood some of film industry's most iconic works.

He directed “The Rain People” in 1969 and co-wrote “Patton” in 1970, but it was the release of “The Godfather” in 1972, which earned three Academy Awards, including Best Director, that cemented him among the greatest film directors in Hollywood.

At 85, Coppola has not slowed down and returns to the big screen with perhaps his biggest film gamble, “Megalopolis.”
