1. LA prepares for long-term closure of 10 Freeway

Local and state officials warned the public there could be a long-term closure of the Santa Monica (10) Freeway in downtown Los Angeles following a massive pallet yard fire and a state of emergency proclamation from Gov. Gavin Newsom to facilitate cleanup and repairs and Monday's commute could test motorists' patience.

The freeway remained closed in both directions between Alameda Street and Santa Fe Avenue, with the closure also affecting connectors to Interstate 5 and the Hollywood (101) and Pomona (60) freeways.

Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass toured the site Sunday and appeared with transportation officials at a Sunday afternoon briefing, where they offered no timetable for reopening the freeway, but promised a "24/7" operation and stressed that every possible effort was being made to hasten the safety evaluation and initiate the needed repairs.

On the eve of Monday morning's rush hour commute, officials urged the public to avoid the area as much as possible, and to plan to use alternate transportation including LA Metro.

2. Tustin schools closed Monday due to air base fire; some to reopen Tuesday

Schools in the Tustin Unified School District will be closed Monday while an assessment is made of the environmental impact on each campus from a fire that destroyed one of two massive World War II blimp hangars at the former Tustin Air Base.

Some campuses have already been cleared and will reopen Tuesday, District officials announced.

Contingency plans are in place for schools not cleared to reopen by Tuesday including virtual learning for students in grades 3-12 and at-home independent learning packets for students in transitional kindergarten through second grades.

Meanwhile, the Orange County Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting Monday to consider ratifying an emergency proclamation, making it easier to deal with the health and environmental fallout from the fire.

3. Police arrest Los Angeles man in connection with dismembered body, missing wife and in-laws

Police have arrested a Los Angeles man in connection with the discovery of the torso of a dismembered female body and the disappearance of his wife and her live-in parents.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Saturday the arrest of 35-year-old Samuel Haskell. He has been jailed on suspicion of murder while police attempt to identify the torso, which was found within a bag in a dumpster on Wednesday.

The arrest was supported by evidence from a search of Haskell's home in the Tarzana area where he lived with his wife, in-laws and three children, police said. Haskell's 37-year-old wife, Mei Li Haskell, has gone missing along with her parents. The children have been located and are being cared for by relatives, police said.

Haskell was being held in lieu of $2 million bail, with a court appearance scheduled for Monday. Multiple media outlets have identified Haskell as the son and namesake of a former executive at a prominent Hollywood talent agency.
