The race for Los Angeles City Council District 14 saw newcomer Ysabel Jurado defeat Kevin de León in the Nov. 5 election. Jurado, a tenants’ right attorney, will now represent the district that includes parts of downtown LA, Eagle Rock and Highland Park.

The councilmember-elect joined “Inside the Issues” host Amrit Singh to discuss her victory in the closely watched race.

“It was a celebratory moment. It was almost two years' worth of work that we put forward,” Jurado said. “We’re just proud of the community and the part of the movement that we were able to show a strong showing.”

On the message that voters sent on a local level during election night, Jurado noted her campaign’s focus was on providing better opportunities for her constituents.

“We were focusing on the bread-and-butter issues that people were facing,” Jurado said. “We weren’t talking abstractly about values. We were talking about putting food on the table, and I think that was something that resonated with a lot of people.”

Jurado also discussed the notable moment on the campaign trail where she faced backlash for derogatory comments about police.

“At the end of the day, I’m here about serving my constituents,” Jurado said. “I think we are mature Angelenos, and given the backdrop of LA city history, we can have those conversations on public safety and police accountability. And I’m willing to work with everyone, even though we don’t see eye-to-eye on every single issue, for the benefit of my constituents.”

Jurado also discussed her top priorities for City Hall, as well as her favorite spots in Highland Park.
