ANAHEIM, Calif. — Anaheim City Council members Tuesday evening are poised to consider approving plans for a new resting place for veterans and the general public in Anaheim Hills.
The council will consider the Gypsum Canyon Cemetery Project, a 238-acre resting place in east Anaheim along the Riverside (91) Freeway just east of the 241 toll road.
The plans include a veterans cemetery on 157 acres and 126 acres for Orange County residents and others.
Tim Deutsch, general manager of the Orange County Cemetery District, which is applying for the permits from the city, said the project amounts to "two independent cemeteries on the parcel."
One will be a burial place for veterans and their spouses, with the public one open to residents of the county with designated areas for first responders and allied veterans who served in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, Deutsch said.
A federal grant was applied for last month to help finance the project, Deutsch said.
It would be the county's first veterans cemetery, joining the Riverside National Cemetery, Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego and Los Angeles National Cemetery. It would help alleviate a problem with dwindling resting places elsewhere in the county.
The city's planning commission approved the plans last month.
