LOS ANGELES — The Grinch hated Christmas, the whole Christmas season. While these places don’t hate, hate, double hate, or loathe the season entirely, two cities in California have been identified as some of the Grinchiest this holiday season.
FinanceBuzz, a financial news and data outlet, analyzed 50 of the biggest U.S. cities and evaluated them across nearly two dozen metrics to help measure the spirit of the season. Holiday events per capita, Google searches, charitable giving and volunteering were among the deciding factors. San Diego and Los Angeles came in third and seventh, respectively.
San Diegans’ search volume for positive terms such as “Christmas party,” “Christmas festival,” and “Christmas dinner” is among the lowest in the country, according to the evaluation. The city has just 80.9-holiday events and festivals per 100,000 people, and roughly 53.5% donate to charity annually.
Los Angeles had one of the lowest volunteer rates in the country, with less than a quarter of Angelenos volunteering their time annually to help other people. The City of Angels has 67.6 holiday events and festivals per 100,000 people, and 47.2% donate to charity annually.
Other areas in SoCal, however, are bursting with holiday cheer.
Riverside easily outpaces other cities in holiday events and festivals relative to population size, with more than 900 per 100,000 citizens. It was ranked the third jolliest city in America this Christmas season..
