SANTA MONICA, Calif. — The Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica Pier will display a 90-foot tall, animated American flag for the Fourth of July weekend celebration.

The red, white and blue display can be seen starting Friday through Tuesday from sunset (about 8:09 p.m.) to 12:30 a.m.

The solar-powered Pacific Wheel features 174,000 LED lights with 16.7 million color value combinations, officials said, providing 81% greater energy savings than most Ferris wheels with incandescent bulbs.

The Ferris wheel is located in Pacific Park, at 380 Santa Monica Pier.

Independence Day is celebrated annually in the U.S. on July 4 to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
