RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. — Local emergency declarations in Rancho Palos Verdes due to landslides that are affecting hundreds of homeowners have been extended through Feb. 17, 2025, city officials announced Wednesday.

The City Council extended the declarations at Tuesday night's meeting for the Portuguese Bend Community Association, Seaview and Portuguese Bend Beach Club neighborhoods.

Also at Tuesday's meeting, city geologist Mike Phipps presented the latest land movement data, showing the overall average rate of movement across the landslide area has reached 2.7 inches per week. Officials said city staff continue to line canyons with protective material and fill fissures as part of "winterization" efforts to prepare for the rainy months.

The land movement in Rancho Palos Verdes accelerated across 680 acres following heavy rains in spring 2023, causing damage to homes, roads and utilities. Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency Sept. 3 in the city in an effort to free up state resources to assist in the response.

Many homes in the landslide area also lost gas or electricity service in the weeks after the land movement accelerated.
