SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — Applications are open Thursday for funding available to assist residents who live near the Chiquita Canyon Landfill with temporary relocation costs or other mitigation measures to combat persistent odors from the facility.
The relief program being offered by the landfill operators provides residents with funds for various "odor mitigation" measures such as temporary relocation, home hardening and increased utility bills.
Residents applying for relief will have to show proof of residency. The program is generally open to residents of Val Verde, Live Oak, Hasley Hills, Hillcrest Parkway, Hasley Canyon and Stevenson Ranch, however, operators said the scope of the program is "under continuous evaluation," so any resident who believes they have been impacted were encouraged to apply.
Information and applications are available online.
Separately, the landfill operators also provided $3.5 million to the Los Angeles County Development Authority, which is providing the Utility Relief funds to select residents "who took proactive action to mitigate the odor impacts to their homes, including using air conditioning continuously during hot summer months."
Information and application details for that program are available here.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued a statement in February saying the landfill presents an "imminent and substantial endangerment" to air and water pollution due to releases of contaminated water and noxious gases from the facility.
