LOS ANGELES (CNS) — Children's films continue to dominate the box office, with Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon opening to $8.6 million this weekend to lead all films in North America, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
Raya and the Last Dragon knocked off another animated film, Warner Bros.' Tom & Jerry, which slipped to second place with $6.6 million after opening last weekend with a robust $13.7 million Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada, Comscore reported.
Third place went to Chaos Walking, a fantasy adventure that opened with $3.8 million. It was followed by the Queens basketball drama Boogie with $1.2 million and The Croods: A New Age — another children's film — with $780,000.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were The Little Things ($550,000), Wonder Woman 1984 ($511,000), The Marksman ($500,000), Judas And The Black Messiah ($282,000), and Monster Hunter ($260,000).
Indoor movie theaters in Southern California are closed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, leaving only limited outdoor screenings.
