LONG BEACH, Calif. – Many students rely on the meals they get at school so the Long Beach Unified School District is going to keep serving lunch even though classes are remote.

Any child can get free food at one of 78 schools weekdays. This program will be available as long as the U.S. Department of Agriculture funding lasts, possibly through the end of the year.

Individual children or parents may pick up meals. Children do not have to be present with adults, but adults will need to show proof that the meal is for a child via birth certificate, student ID or other legal document.

Aaliyah Lucas is the mother of 9-year-old James and 5-year-old Princess. They are getting meals from the LBUSD.

“I’m not working right now because of the COVID-19. I was working and they stopped the unemployment benefits and things like that so this will be a great thing for me. I know I can go somewhere and get my kids some healthy food,” said Lucas.

Lucas has adapted their home to become a learning space with special studying nooks for Princess and James. At the same time, she is also studying to get her Master’s degree at night.

“At first I was stressed but Long Beach School District they have workshops on YouTube to give you tips how to deal with this, strategies. So I just took a little from those tips and strategies and I’m just taking it a day at a time,” said Lucas.
