Malibu’s iconic surfboard maker and future mayor is out of the Intensive Care Unit and back to work after suffering from smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning while defending his home from the Woolsey fire last week. Jefferson “Zuma Jay” Wagner was badly burned and said his lungs and kidneys were only functioning at about 80 percent more than a week after the fire.

On Tuesday, Wagner gave Congressman Ted Lieu (D-CA 33rd District) a tour of Malibu’s Disaster Assistance Center.

Looking back at his recovery, Wagner said the amount of smoke in his lungs stunned the hospital staff when he arrived at the hospital.

“So much crud was coming out of my lungs it smelled up the room and started to get around to other rooms in the ICU,” Wagner said. Doctors have prescribed antibiotics and other medications but say he should make a full recovery.

The Hollywood stuntman’s home in Latigo Canyon, which he say was paid for by his five-year stint as the Marlboro Man, was destroyed in the fire. His iconic surf shop on the Pacific Coast Highway, however, still stands.

For the past four days, Wagner has visited the resource center at the former Malibu Courthouse where residents can sign up for government assistance and get help from non-profits and the city. It may take years for most residents, including Wagner, to wade through the paperwork and permitting process and rebuild their homes.

The center is open Monday through Saturday and offers guidance for disaster recovery, housing assistance and FEMA registration among other resources.
