ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. — The Orange Unified School District has proposed a policy that would require teachers and other administrators to notify parents, within three days, if their child chooses to use a different name, use different pronouns than those assigned to their gender, play on sports or participate in programs that do not align with their gender, or ask to make changes to their official record.

The policy language follows that of AB1314, an assembly bill that failed to get a committee hearing earlier in the year.

Chino Valley Unified and Murrieta Valley Unified have adopted a policy very similar to this and are at the center of a civil rights investigation by the California state attorney general.

The Orange Unified Board of Education did not vote on the policy, but is expected to make their final decision during the second reading of the policy in September.
