It’s now easy to get a sparkling smile adorned with Swarovski crystals, gold charms, even real diamonds. And it takes less than 10 minutes.

You’ll find the tooth jewelry in South Gate at a place called Tooth Kandy.

Susana Murillo started the tooth gemming shop. You can spot her work around the world including on celebrities like Kendall Jenner. But this self-styled tooth fairy wasn’t an instant success. When she started South Gate’s first tattoo shop with her husband, there was one big problem.

“I don’t tattoo,” said Murillo.

She got a crazy alternative idea: to bling out teeth. The twinkle in her eye to add twinkles to teeth quickly became a reality.

On one arm, she sports tattoos of her mom and dad who came to this country with nothing, to serve as a permanent reminder of how far she’s come.

She worked with an orthodontist to come up with a safe process to apply gems to teeth. They last anywhere from six months to two years.

It only takes about eight to 10 minutes per tooth with a starting price of $80.

Murillo says it’s a lot like braces and the gems can be easily removed by a dentist.

The trend is rapidly gaining popularity. So far, Murillo has franchised her technology to 150 people.

While tooth gemming may sound like a fun fashion trend, it should also be noted that the National Dental Association's official position on the matter is that "the fabrication, use and application of oral jewelry should be strongly discouraged."
