BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. — Amusement parks are reopening and some of them look a little different than the last time we were able to visit.

The hills around Big Bear Lake are alive with the sound of screams and laughter, most of which are coming from the Mineshaft Coaster, the newest ride at Alpine Slide.

What You Need To Know

  • The Mineshaft Coaster is the newest ride at Alpine Slide Big Bear

  • The roller coaster is built into the mountainside overlooking Big Bear Lake

  • Each cart is equipped with brakes so users can control the downhill speed

  • People can ride alone or in pairs

Alyssa Moore, her 7-year-old daughter Markayla, and her niece took their first lap Saturday.

Markayla had never been to Big Bear before, much less on a roller coaster. Alyssa used to only come to Big Bear for the snow.

“I never knew that Big Bear had all of this until I was like what can we do in the summertime in Big Bear," Moore said.

The Mineshaft Coaster can achieve speeds as fast as 30 miles per hour and according to the Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain website, the brand new ride is the first and only mountain coaster in California.

More than a mile of steel track takes you all over the mountainside for this newest ride. From the highest point gravity slides you down while you control the brakes. The carts fit more than one person, a closeness that’s been taboo for so long.

“This is like the first time where we can actually all come out and hang out and have a good time,” Moore said.
