EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — A 4-3 record on a road trip is often acceptable. Winning away from home is never easy in the NBA, no matter time, place or circumstances.

What You Need To Know

  • Lakers defeat Hornets 101-93 in Charlotte Tuesday

  • Kyle Kuzma scored 24 points and uncorked a posturizing play right before halftime

  • The Lakers return home for a game Thursday against Boston

  • It will feature fans at Staples Center for the first time in 13 months

Then there are the Lakers, who will absolutely accept with open arms their 4-3 run through mostly Eastern Conference teams. No LeBron James, no Anthony Davis and no losing record over the last 11 days.

Kyle Kuzma and Dennis Schröder made sure of a successful trip in the Lakers’ 101-93 victory Tuesday over the Charlotte Hornets at Spectrum Center. Kuzma scored 24 points and uncorked a posturizing play right before halftime, taking a pass with a head of steam near the free-throw line and elevating for a thunderous dunk over Charlotte center Bismack Biyombo.

Schröder finished with 19 points and six assists with only one turnover. He and Alex Caruso made key three-pointers down the stretch as the Lakers made all six of their free throws in the final 30 seconds.

“It’s just been a disjointed trip, a disjointed season — seemingly a new rotation, new guys in there each night. Our guys are just competing through it,” Lakers coach Frank Vogel said. “They’re giving great effort.”

Andre Drummond was quiet offensively with only four points but had 12 rebounds and also a key steal in the final seconds, tipping the ball away from Devonte’ Graham.

“When it’s crunch time, I try to make the right decisions. It was time to do it,” Drummond said.

Graham scored 19 points for the Hornets, who, like the Lakers, were also short-handed. LaMelo Ball, Gordon Hayward and Terry Rozier were three of the five Charlotte players sidelined by injuries. In addition to James and Davis, Markieff Morris sat out for the Lakers after sustaining a sprained left ankle Monday night against New York.

The Lakers’ road trip included a stunning 126-101 victory over Brooklyn, along with wins against Sacramento and Toronto before Tuesday’s success. The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly beating the Nets despite not having five players (James, Davis, Kuzma, Wesley Matthews and Marc Gasol).

The Lakers shot a sublime 56% that night from three-point range and rode Drummond’s 20 points and 11 rebounds to a surprising victory.

The Lakers return home for a game Thursday against Boston that will feature fans at Staples Center for the first time in 13 months. Roughly, 2,000 fans will be allowed to attend the game with strict COVID-19 social-distancing policies in place.
