THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The ZOZO Championship and 78 of the world’s best golfers have descended upon Thousand Oaks’ Sherwood Country Club .
The PGA event would normally be played in Japan, but in order to reduce travel complications in the face of Covid-19, it landed in Southern California.
The Caddiemaster at Sherwood, Jerry Cobleigh knows just how big of a weekend this is for the course he calls home.
“Everyone’s excited. We got the top seventy something golf pros coming to Sherwood Country Club,” said Cobleigh.
He's caddied on this course for three decades and he knows this PGA event arrives with big excitement and big storylines.
Among the star studded field of golfers is Tiger Woods, who is not just the reigning ZOZO Champion, but comes back to Sherwood in the hunt to make history.
A win at Sherwood would be Woods' 83rd career tour win, which would be the most in PGA history.
What’s more is Woods' familiarity with the course, he hosted his own golf tournament at this Jack Nicklaus Signature Course from 2000-2013.
Cobleigh says that the ZOZO pivoting to Sherwood is a silver lining in the frustrating times of COVID-19.
“We can’t really have a regular event here because we’re not big enough facility wise. The driving range isn’t huge so we couldn’t have 120 or more players, we just don’t have the grass for it. So to have the opportunity to just have 70-something players, it’s the only way we’re going to get an event of this size on our resume.”
The course has not only served the golf community, but has been a backdrop for Hollywood. The par 72 course has been the set for shows and films ranging from Robin Hood to The Dukes Of Hazard to Bridesmaids.
The ZOZO Championship will conclude on Sunday, October 25th.
