COMMERCE, Calif. (CNS) — Sheriff’s deputies will conduct traffic operations Tuesday intended to ensure the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists in Commerce.
The sheriff’s department will have extra deputies patrolling for “the most dangerous driver behaviors that put the safety of people biking or walking at risk” in the Commerce area from 2 to 8 p.m., according to a department statement.
Deputies will be on the lookout for violations including speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield or provide the right of way to bicyclists and pedestrians and failing to stop for signs and signals, according to the LASD.
“We all have places to be and not everyone gets there by car,” sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Hill said. “Bicyclists and pedestrians have the same rights to the road but face even more risk without the protections vehicles have. We should all be looking out for one another.”
In order to remain safe, pedestrians were advised to:
- use crosswalks, when available;
- take notice of approaching vehicles;
- refrain from running or walking into the path of vehicles; and
- remain visible by wearing clothing that can be noticed easily.
Similarly, the LASD advised drivers to:
- follow the speed limit and slow down at intersections;
- avoid blocking crosswalks when making turns;
- be prepared to stop for pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks; and
- never drive impaired.
