ANAHEIM, Calif. — Watching a street race could officially become illegal in Anaheim.

The Anaheim City Council is slated to finalize an ordinance Tuesday night that would ban participating in and or watching a street race or a so-called takeover in the city.

Last month, the city council unanimously passed the first reading of the ordinance. If the council gives the second reading tonight, the law will go into effect March 11.

According to the staff report, spectators and those found to be involved in a street race can be arrested and face a misdemeanor charge.

The ordinance comes a few months after a couple of high-profile street races turned deadly in Anaheim, Costa Mesa, and Santa Ana.

In October, a car doing donuts in the parking lot of a retail center surrounded by other suspected street racers in front of a crowd hit a bystander, who had to be transported to a hospital. That same night, the group of street racers then relocated to Costa Mesa, where a person died and another was seriously injured during a street race, according to reports.

In July, an illegal street race crashed into a car and killed a driver identified as Orange County Register editor Gene Harbrecht.

Anaheim police have said there have been more street races, car and motorcycle takeovers, and spectators watching due to the advent of social media.
