LOS ANGELES — It’s been two years since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.

Since then, women have undergone restrictions from strict dress codes to banning education beyond the sixth grade, according to the United Nations

In an effort to amplify women’s voices across the globe, the Women’s Voices Now nonprofit uses film to bring awareness to the issues women face.

This year’s 2023 Women’s Voices Now Film Festival grand prize winner featured “With This Breath I Fly,” a feature-length documentary filmed over 10 years, following the journey of two women in the country imprisoned for “moral crimes.”

A screening of the documentary will be shown at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at UCLA’s James Bridges Theater.

Women’s Voices Now has worked with over 800 filmmakers in over 85 countries, according to the organization.
