SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. – Imagine having a job where playing with superhero hands is all in a day's work.

“I feel powerful with this thing on,” said Julio Galvez while engaged in hand-to-hand combat with Reza Asgari with each wearing huge electronic hands. The two have surrounded themselves with all the things they love in their new store, We Can Be Heroes Comics, which just opened in October, 2019, in Chatsworth.

“When the opportunity came for us to go into business together I jumped on it, because I pretty much thought to myself, 'what do I want to do with my life?' And I realized it's to be 12 forever,” said Asgari.

Galvez was the first person Sherman Oaks Chamber of Commerce president and CEO David Phelps thought of to help coordinate the idea of highlighting pop culture and comics at this year's Sherman Oak Street Fair with the premiere of "SOPOPCON."

“This is a passion project for me and David, you know, to be able to put this together it's different than most cons. It's a more of a festival atmosphere. I'm telling you this is going to be super, super fun,” said Galvez.

SOPOPCON will be the first street-based pop culture convention in California. Fans of comics, fantasy and science fiction will join over 200 vendors, a carnival, gourmet food and a live stage and artists selling their wares.

The new pop culture zone will include comic shop collectibles, pop culture, fashion and cosplay.

“I knew we could build on it and add a component that builds in the influence of the entertainment industry and pop culture, and what Sherman Oaks is known for historically into an event that’s already established and successful in the community,” said Phelps.

The event will provide visitors with the chance to meet established comic artists like Scott Koblish – whose work includes Marvel Comics and popular titles like Deadpool, GI Joe, Elektra and Excalibur.

“I've always done drawing so there's really nothing else that I feel like I'd be suited for doing at this point,” said Koblish.

You can meet Koblish and other artists at the SOPOPCON autograph booth.

“The valley is the perfect place for it's just a perfect place for it because I mean the major studios are here," said Galvez.“The valley is the perfect place for it's just a perfect place for it because I mean the major studios are here," said Galvez. "Warner Brothers, Disney, and Universal Studios. It's media here in the valley, and we need to celebrate it here.”

The Sherman Oaks Street Fair and SOPOPCON takes place Sunday, Oct. 20 from 10am to 6pm. Ventura Blvd. will be closed between Van Nuys Blvd. and Kester Ave.
