1. Thousands of UC academic researchers, student employees plan strike Monday

Thousands of researchers and student employees at the 10 University of California campuses are planning to go on strike at 8 a.m. Monday in an effort to secure improved pay and working conditions.

UC officials are in contract negotiations with the United Auto Workers regarding four separate academic bargaining units: postdoctoral scholars, academic researchers, academic student employees (teaching assistants/readers/tutors) and graduate student researchers, Ryan King, spokesman for the UC President's Office, told City News Service on Sunday.

UAW officials said bargaining teams met late Saturday night and decided to proceed with a strike Monday "unless UC ceases its unlawful conduct in order to reach fair contracts before then."

The talks affect 48,000 workers, including 17,000 student researchers, at the 10 UC schools, including UCLA and UC Irvine. They voted to authorize a strike in October.

2. 6 hurt after car drives through Los Angeles street carnival

Six people were hospitalized after a car drove through a crowded weekend street carnival in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

Police were trying to pull over the driver of the white Porsche Cayenne around 8 p.m. Saturday when the vehicle crashed through a cement rail and into the carnival, officials said.

Six people between 30 and 50 years old were struck and taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange.

3. James could return to the Lakers' lineup later this week

LeBron James could return to the Los Angeles Lakers’ lineup later this week as he recovers from a groin injury.

James missed his second straight game with a left adductor strain when the Lakers hosted the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday. James is day-to-day with the strain, which occurred last Wednesday during the fourth quarter of the Clippers’ 114-101 victory over the Lakers.

Coach Darvin Ham said James could return to the practice report by the middle of the week. The Lakers’ next game isn’t until Friday against the Detroit Pistons.

“I think him being out is just as much precautionary. We’re only 12 games into the season. There’s 70 games left to be played here,” Ham said. “We have a favorable schedule where he can sit. We feel good about that, knowing he’s had these days to not put any pressure on it, but strengthen it and treat it to the point where he’s able to get back out there.”

2022 midterm election results

The 2022 midterm election is over, but votes in several races are still being counted across California and around the country. Most statewide races in California were called by the end of the night. California voters handed Gavin Newsom a second term as governor after he easily beat back a recall effort last year. Sen. Alex Padilla made history as the first Latino to be elected to represent California in the U.S. Senate.

“In Focus SoCal” host sits down with Seema Mehta, political writer for the LA Times, to discuss some races that have been called.
