ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. — Hospitals in Orange County have invested heavily into new buildings and programs in recent years, with billions of dollars in construction begun, completed or promised in 2022.

Here’s a look at how some of the money was spent.

Providence Mission Hospital

The hospital announced an estimated $712 million expansion in Mission Viejo, which would add a 100-bed patient tower. The investment covers expansion in Rancho Mission Viejo and San Clemente.

City of Hope

City of Hope invested millions into a new comprehensive cancer center, opening the doors in 2022 to the outpatient portion of the new building. The center will offer expert treatment in a range of cancers including lung, breast, gastrointestinal and blood cancers. The project included a $50 million donation from the Lennar Foundation. Called the City of Hope Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center, the four-story building will be home to nearly 1,000 trials of different phases. Treatments at the center also include integrative approaches like acupuncture. The center also has a range of preventative treatments and early detection methods using blood testing and imaging. The building will also be home to clinical research and surgical oncology.

With input from the community and patients, the facility boasts 67 exam rooms and treatment rooms, 43 bays and 10 private treatment rooms in the infusion center and what the hospital calls a “Hope Boutique.” That feature includes a full-service salon with “oncology-trained cosmetologists.”

Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute

The institute was celebrated with an October ribbon cutting and paves the way for a slate of new programs and patient services. The clinic includes ample space for patients, 42 rooms, a pharmacy and a special suite for infusions localizing some services, so nearby patients have a nearby option. The institute is within the new Susan & Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences, a 110,000-square-foot complex on campus.

Susan and Henry Samueli have donated hundreds of millions of dollars over the years, including a $200 million gift in 2017 to the college of health sciences. The school is also constructing a more than $1 billion medical campus with a planned 144 bed.

Hoag Hospital Foundation

In 2020, Hoag Hospital Foundation completed a fundraising round that totaled $760 million. In 2022, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian received a $106 million gift, the largest in the 70-year history of the hospital. The money is part of an ongoing $1 billion spending spree, which will add six buildings, 155 more beds and eight operating rooms.

Children’s Hospital of Orange County

The Argyros Family Foundation donated $10 million to Children’s Hospital of Orange County in 2022. The money was specifically directed to the Fetal Care Center of Southern California, part of a collaboration with UCI Health. The center opened last year and has seen 700 patients. The money will allow the center to hire additional staff and contribute to research on fetal disorders.
